M2M Solutions Improve Service in the Public Sector
M2M solutions for the public sector create a larger number of automated and electronic services. Amongst other services Deutsche Telekom offers real-time parking availability management and demand-oriented management of street lighting.
As a result of population growth, limited resources and high traffic levels, the public sector faces numerous challenges. At the same time, citizens and corporations expect comprehensive services. M2M applications for the public sector provide benefits in traffic management, public transportation, parking management, waste and water management, and environmental services, among others. Therefore, cities are advised to abandon classical approaches and move toward Smart Cities transformation.
There are various scenarios where M2M solutions can support the public sector, like helping monitoring and managing parking space availability in real time. Thanks to M2M, street lighting and street cleaning can also be managed in keeping with demand. M2M can be used to monitor construction yards and control the functions of structural facilities and machine parks too.
M2M Improves Efficiency of Public Infrastructure
M2M technologies enable cities and local authorities to monitor their public infrastructure remotely. Street lighting is used more efficiently, for example, and public parking spaces are put to optimum capacity use.
Infrastructure development is a costly task for the public sector. That is why cities and local authorities are on the lookout for ways to reduce costs and open up new sources of revenue. M2M solutions lay the groundwork for a more efficient use of public resources and create added value for the public.
Controlling street lighting on a needs basis with M2M
Street lighting, for example, can be controlled on a needs basis with the aid of M2M technology. Individual lights are switched on and off in a targeted way via connections with a service center. Sensors also enable environmental information to be recorded. The lights are connected to Telekom’s mobile network without affecting the existing infrastructure.
Thanks to remotely controlled street lighting, electricity consumption and costs are cut by up to 35 percent. In addition, malfunctions are much easier to identify, thereby reducing maintenance costs. At the same time the safety of the general public is increased by means of needs-based lighting on, for example, dark parking lots.
Real-time management of parking availability
M2M technologies also make real-time management of parking availability possible. Available spaces are shown in real time and parking prices can be adjusted to demand. The parking meters are connected to the service center via a modem, with the existing infrastructure remaining unchanged.
Parking prices adjusted to demand generate more revenue. Better information on availability also improves customer inflow. Motorists benefit too. Information on parking availability saves them time, and less time spent on looking for somewhere to park eases pressure on the environment and resources.
