M2M Solutions Improve Service in the Public Sector

M2M Solutions Improve Service in the Public Sector

M2M solutions for the public sector create a larger number of automated and electronic services. Amongst other services Deutsche Telekom offers real-time parking availability management and demand-oriented management of street lighting.

As a result of population growth, limited resources and high traffic levels, the public sector faces numerous challenges. At the same time, citizens and corporations expect comprehensive services. M2M applications for the public sector provide benefits in traffic management, public transportation, parking management, waste and water management, and environmental services, among others. Therefore, cities are advised to abandon classical approaches and move toward Smart Cities transformation.

There are various scenarios where M2M solutions can support the public sector, like helping monitoring and managing parking space availability in real time. Thanks to M2M, street lighting and street cleaning can also be managed in keeping with demand. M2M can be used to monitor construction yards and control the functions of structural facilities and machine parks too.

M2M Solutions Make Environmental Monitoring More Precise

M2M solutions make environmental monitoring more precise

M2M and the Internet of Things (IoT) play an important role in monitoring the environment. M2M solutions make early warnings of natural disasters possible and optimize agricultural processes.

Pollution of the environment has now reached alarming proportions. The extreme burden of pollution has made many Chinese cities almost uninhabitable. Worse still, airborne pollutants are to blame for several million premature deaths per year.

M2M solutions make early warnings possible

With these figures in mind, environmental monitoring is becoming increasingly important. M2M solutions and the Internet of Things as a part of Smart Cities are an important component of the control systems. Thanks to M2M solutions, for example, water samples from rivers or lakes can be taken and results relayed to the authorities automatically via a SIM card so that people can be warned earlier.

Along with climate change the number of natural disasters is on the increase. Munich Re, the world’s largest re-insurer, reported around 23,000 fatalities due to natural disasters in 2015, or about three times as many as in the previous year. In the future, using M2M solutions will enable us to monitor the environment in a precise and timely way, such as by continuous measurement of water levels. Bush and forest fires, floods and landslides will be identified at an early stage as a result.

Benefits for Residents

  • Improved environmental policies
  • Early warning systems
  • Improved parks and environment

M2M offers farmers more efficient options

M2M technologies also help protect animal habitats. They will, for instance, connect frog ponds that do not always have a water intake and threaten to run dry in the summer months. When the water level runs low an M2M-based system registers the falling water level and automatically notifies the expert in charge, who can then send a tanker with fresh water to replenish the pond without delay.

Last not least, M2M solutions open up new and more efficient options for agriculture. Production and growth processes are controlled, monitored and managed better by using sensors on the ground. Environmental information on fields is constantly available in real time. The sensors measure parameters such as filling level, temperature, and humidity. The systems store environmental monitoring data continuously and alert the farmer by text message or e-mail in the event of irregularities.
