Vehicle telematics enabled by M2M solutions is now indispensable, and not just in fleet management. Along with vehicle- and driver-related services it is also reaching more and more end customers.

M2M communication via the mobile network keeps fleet managers fully informed about the exact position of their vehicles at all times. The built-in M2M module also relays continuous data about fuel consumption, mileage and tire pressure and notifies the manufacturer, garage or dealer of breakdowns or upcoming service appointments. M2M facilitates automatic transmission of vehicle data to the manufacturer for different service-based business models so they can stay in touch with the customer even after the car warranty ends. In the connected car, M2M directs motorists around traffic holdups, to a free parking space and to the nearest filling station. It also provides passengers with mobile Internet access via WLAN hotspots and downloads entertainment offerings automatically.

Every year automobile clubs provide roadside assistance millions of times on the roads. In a Connected Car with a telematics system M2M solutions ensure swift assistance not only in breakdowns but also with service appointments and traffic congestion.

In the event of a breakdown M2M technology searches for roadside service or, if drivers do not have a mobile phone on them, directs them to a roadside emergency telephone. The driver presses a button to make a breakdown call via the in-car telematics system or a special box with a built-in mobile SIM card. The bCall transmits not only the car’s location but also its on-board diagnostic data. Via an M2M web portal the roadside assistance call center has all the relevant information available at a glance and sets up a mobile voice connection with the driver. After analyzing the cause of the breakdown the call center guides the breakdown service or recovery vehicle to the damaged vehicle.

M2M keeps a constant eye on the car’s condition

The telematics system regularly collects data on the vehicle’s status, such as mileage, wear and tear of the brake blocks, or battery voltage. This data is sent to the driver’s smartphone by Bluetooth, on which he can access it by means of an app. At the same time the app sends the data via the mobile network to a cloud server where it is analyzed and processed for sending to a car dealer of the driver’s choice. If required, the dealer will suggest a service appointment or inform the drivers of their car’s malfunctions. In this way the Internet of Things (IoT) enhances customer proximity and quality of service. M2M systems of this kind are also available as inexpensive retrofit kits for older vehicles.

Early warning of congestion ahead   

As a part of the Internet of Things the Connected Car not only downloads new satnav maps and the latest roadworks and weather information automatically to help the driver. C2I, or connecting the vehicle with the infrastructure, could in the future reduce the reaction time significantly to traffic congestion ahead.

For the Digital Motorway Test Bed on Germany’s A9 autobahn, Telekom has equipped a section of its fast LTE mobile network with Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology. Where information from the vehicle at the end of the tailback used first to be sent to the cloud via an LTE mast for processing before it could be relayed to approaching vehicles, the MEC system has a cloudlet server attached to the LTE mast and relays the information directly to approaching cars. In this way the signal time between two vehicles has already been reduced to less than 20 milliseconds, thereby helping to prevent typical rear-impact crashes at the end of the tailback.
