Vehicle Telematics / Fleet Management
Customers and Manufacturers Benefit from Vehicle Telematics Data
Vehicle telematics enabled by M2M solutions is now indispensable, and not just in fleet management. Along with vehicle- and driver-related services it is also reaching more and more end customers.
M2M communication via the mobile network keeps fleet managers fully informed about the exact position of their vehicles at all times. The built-in M2M module also relays continuous data about fuel consumption, mileage and tire pressure and notifies the manufacturer, garage or dealer of breakdowns or upcoming service appointments. M2M facilitates automatic transmission of vehicle data to the manufacturer for different service-based business models so they can stay in touch with the customer even after the car warranty ends. In the connected car, M2M directs motorists around traffic holdups, to a free parking space and to the nearest filling station. It also provides passengers with mobile Internet access via WLAN hotspots and downloads entertainment offerings automatically.
M2M Gives Fleet Managers Control over the Connected Fleet
Companies that connect their vehicles by M2M on the Internet of Things make their fleet management more efficient and save time and money.
At companies with a vehicle fleet the fleet manager’s tasks include always being fully informed about the fleet. M2M communication provides smart assistance. A number of sensors in each vehicle send data to a built-in telematics system with an M2M SIM card or a module with an M2M SIM chip. It relays the information automatically to an M2M platform that collects and processes the data. The fleet manager then accesses the information via a web portal on a PC or tablet.
Real-time information about position and availability
Thanks to GPS and the M2M connection the fleet manager knows at all times exactly where each vehicle is, guides the driver around traffic congestion and informs the customer of the vehicle’s estimated time of arrival. The fleet manager sees which driver is available and which vehicle is closest to the customer and can then send order and destination data to the driver’s cockpit display. The driver confirms receipt and, later, fulfillment of the order while the bill is created automatically. So the fleet manager uses the display of a vehicle with which he is connected by M2M as an additional communication channel with his driver.
Monitoring of construction site vehicles
Thanks to M2M, fleet managers in construction companies receive in real time the latest information about their connected construction site vehicles. An automatic report is sent to the web portal as soon as a defect occurs or the fuel tank is empty. By means of geofencing, misuse or theft of valuable site vehicles can also be recorded.
Sensor data sent from the vehicle even enables the fleet manager to make remote diagnoses. Fleet management service providers can proactively offer to replace parts that are subject to wear and tear. When a vehicle reaches a specified mileage and a service is due, the system notifies the fleet manager and the workshop. Optimized maintenance planning also reduces the fleet’s value loss, and in the event of a breakdown the Telematics Control Unit automatically sends the location and a diagnostic trouble code to the fleet manager and the breakdown service.
Savings potential for consumption
On the web portal the fleet manager has an overview of the entire fleet’s fuel consumption. By analyzing the sensor data the driver’s handling of the vehicle can be optimized, leading to lower fuel consumption, lower costs, and less of a burden on the environment. Automated digital logbooks record driving and off-road times and keep records of the driver’s mandatory rest periods.
