Vehicle telematics enabled by M2M solutions is now indispensable, and not just in fleet management. Along with vehicle- and driver-related services it is also reaching more and more end customers.

M2M communication via the mobile network keeps fleet managers fully informed about the exact position of their vehicles at all times. The built-in M2M module also relays continuous data about fuel consumption, mileage and tire pressure and notifies the manufacturer, garage or dealer of breakdowns or upcoming service appointments. M2M facilitates automatic transmission of vehicle data to the manufacturer for different service-based business models so they can stay in touch with the customer even after the car warranty ends. In the connected car, M2M directs motorists around traffic holdups, to a free parking space and to the nearest filling station. It also provides passengers with mobile Internet access via WLAN hotspots and downloads entertainment offerings automatically.

In the Connected Car, driver-related services provide the driver with information about the route and the passengers with WLAN for their mobile devices. Manufacturers and suppliers utilize the car’s connected status to offer customers new services.

The Internet of Things now extends to the car. Where the car radio and navigation unit used to lead separate existences there is now a central infotainment system controlled by a multifunctional touchscreen display. With its mobile wireless module and SIM card or M2M SIM chip the system can constantly connect with the mobile network and the Internet as required. 

Navigation systems provide automatic information en route

Thanks to GPS the navigation unit is always aware of the vehicle’s exact location, works out the best possible route to the stated destination along with estimated time of arrival and fuel consumption. It gives real-time warnings of tailbacks, accidents and construction sites and recommends alternative routes. The system retrieves the required information automatically from web services via the mobile network, processes it and shows it on the display. Road maps are updated regularly.

In addition to the latest traffic data, the navigation system has access to weather data, recommends points of interest and filling stations with the lowest fuel prices along the route and guides the driver to a free parking space at the destination. This automatic real-time data interchange via the mobile network saves the driver time and fuel costs.

Infotainment system, WLAN hotspot and multimedia station

Thanks to the steadily falling cost of mobile data transmission and simultaneous increase in speed and nationwide network availability the use of in-car mobile services is gaining attraction for the end user. During the journey the infotainment system offers all passengers access to Internet radio stations via the mobile network and provides their mobile devices with swift WLAN via the built-in LTE hotspot. 

Connected Car & Smart Home

The Internet of Things also connects different M2M scenarios such as the Connected Car and the Smart Home with each other. In-car infotainment systems link up with the driver’s Connected Home. Alarms triggered by smoke or motion detectors or water sensors are sent via the mobile network to the driver’s dashboard display. Conversely, the driver can activate the central heating on his way home or switch the washing machine on. The home and the car recognize each other by means of geofencing. As the car approaches the home, the Smart Home switches onto its “at home” status, deactivating the burglar alarm and switching the lights on.

eCall – The M2M emergency solution

While car buyers can choose between infotainment and comfort offerings for the Connected Car, from April 2018 one aspect of the car’s connected status will be mandatory on road safety grounds. From then on, according to a resolution adopted by the European Parliament, all new cars registered in the EU must be equipped with the automatic accident emergency call system eCall. It consists of a GMS module for the mobile network connection and a GPS receiver to determine the car’s location. Mobile antennas inside the car roof will extend the system’s range.

The eCall system, housed in a kind of black box to protect it from accident damage, is connected with the vehicle via a number of sensors. If, for example, the airbags are inflated in a frontal impact collision or special crash sensors are activated, an M2M emergency call is sent automatically to the Europe-wide emergency number 112. The call includes key data for the rescue services, such as the vehicle’s exact position, direction of travel, the time of the accident or the number of passengers. In addition a voice connection to the rescue control desk is set up.

eCall is designed to notify the rescue services of an accident faster even if the driver and passengers are unconscious. Accident witnesses can also activate the system manually by pressing a button. Data privacy is assured, according to the EU Commission, because eCall is a “sleeping system” that only relays data in an emergency.
